Rain or shine, we always head to the State Fair of Texas on opening day. You know my theory, the grease is fresh, the food is fried and ready for you and the animals are happy to see you. I thought I would share with you my top 10 things to do at the fair.
We went first in the morning and it was raining. So be kind when you notice my frizzy hair due to the 100% humidity yesterday. I thought I would take a second and tell you WHY I love the fair. I’ve been attending the State Fair of Texas ever since I was in college. Back then it was a whole different ball game with odd characters in big tents and terrifying rides. But a lot of it is still the same such as the delicious Fletcher’s corny dogs, candied apples and cotton candy. If you watched my Instagram stories yesterday, you saw my day at the fair. It was so much fun!
I wore this casual outfit and my GiGi New York cross body bag. However, I did have my Barrington Gifts tote bag because I was shooting an upcoming blog post and needed to bring a change of clothes with me. It’s the perfect size for everything I need on a blog shoot. Don’t want to bring a bag? The O-venture key ring with attachment is perfect because its large enough to hold your iPhone, credit card, ID and fair tickets. The key rings come in lots of colors which makes it fun.
OK, all of that aside, lets talk about my 10 favorite things to do at the State Fair of Texas:
Take a pic with Big Tex! Fun fact: He wears a 95 gallon hat and size 96 boots. “Howdy Folks!”
Eat a Fletcher’s corny dog (or 2). This year they have them in a foot long size too! There’s only one original – make sure its Fletcher’s.
Watch the pig races. It’s so fun. They race all the way around the track to try to get a Oreo cookie. Cheer on your favorite pig!
Attend one of the college games. Texas vs. OU is October 14
Go to one of the many great concerts at the Chevrolet Main Stage. They’re FREE! Pat Green is there on October 14
Stay until the evening and watch the Starlight Parade
Ride the Texas Star ferris wheel. Take a picture from the top. The Dallas city view is amazing!
Go to the Children’s Health Barnyard (petting zoo). My favorite is the momma pig with her piglets. There’s a giraffe, goats, kangaroo and so much to see. And you can feed them! Be sure to check the next building for the livestock shows too.
Check out all the buildings on the fair grounds for the new autos, butter sculptures, Texas in the first World War exhibit (Hall of State building) and much more. The fair grounds permanent buildings have some amazing things to see.
Most importantly, get your coupons, ride some fun rides and play games on the Midway. I love to take the Gondola ride from one end to the other. It gives you a great aerial view of the fair grounds. Plus its a fantastic way to sit down and rest for a few minutes. Secret tip: Don’t ever throw your coupons away. You can use them the next year as they do not expire.
The fair is open daily at 10:00 AM and runs now through October 22. What is your favorite thing to do a the fair?
xoxo – Tanya
