Last week I was invited to meet jewelry designer Ashley Pittman and preview her collection. This beautiful blonde started her work in 2006 when she was volunteering in Rwanda. Today, she employs 75 artisans in Kenya and designs some of the most beautiful pieces I have seen using repurposed horn and other materials from Africa.
Ashley Pittman reinterprets the power and simplicity expressed in the shapes and textures of centuries-old African jewelry. Each piece is entirely handcrafted in Kenya featuring repurposed horn, semi precious gemstones, bronze and materials indigenous to East Africa.
The horn is sourced from Kenyan Ankole cows that are a food source for the local community and villages. The animals are not harmed in order to obtain their horn, and livestock farming is a sustainable, pasture-based system. Due to the nature of the horn, which varies from dark, black-brown to marbled tan and white, each pieces is one of a kind and unique.
You can find her gorgeous jewelry at Neiman Marcus, Stanley Korshak, Bergdorf Goodman and Net-A-Porter. You can even find some on sale at Neiman Marcus Last Call. Just click the store name to shop. I have linked you to the Ashley Pittman jewelry. Additionally, I have linked you to some of my favorites below.
By the way, when I am out and about previewing things for the blog, I am just shooting with my new iPhone 6+. How are the pictures? xoxo – Tanya
I love Ashley Pittman jewelry too. Especially the large chunky bracelets. They are amazing! Thanks for the post on her! 🙂
