Did you hear? Uber photographer Gray Malin blew in to town for a book signing and I got a chance to sit down with him for a quick chat on Wednesday evening at Forty Five Ten.

You might not know but Gray is from Dallas. He was excited to visit for the book launch of his beautiful coffee table book Beaches. The 144 page compilation of aerial birds eye view photographs all taken while Malin hangs out of a doorless helicopter spans six continents. One gorgeous shot after another. Stunning! It’s dedicated to his parents and sister. The guy is so charming that I want to keep him!

Here are five things you need to know about Gray Malin.

Q: You’re from Dallas. Where did you go to school?

A: I attended ESD. We lived in Preston Hollow and my parents still own the house I grew up in.

Q: How did you get started in photography?

A: I first took photography in high school with Janis Hefley. Back then we used film. She was a huge influence on me creatively. I immediately fell in love with it and continued when I attended college. Of course, now I shoot everything digital and use a Nikon and Canon.

Q: Your Prada Marfa series first got you noticed in 2009. Tell me how that happened.

A: My family went to Marfa a lot when we were children and I just fell in love with it. Although my parents were transplants from New York, they loved the Texas geography. When I went back to Marfa as a photographer, I fell in love with it all over again. We used locals for the series and it really resonates.

Q: Did you always want to publish a book?

A: It’s been a dream of mine for a long time. It took five years to make it happen.

Q: You live in L.A. and your studio is in West Hollywood. What do you miss most about Dallas?

A: Are you kidding? Mi Cocina!

Beaches is $40 and available at Forty Five Ten and linked for you below along with some of my favorite Gray Malin prints. They make the perfect gift!

Trivia tidbit: Gray’s first name is Peter. Peter Gray Malin.   xoxo – Tanya
