It seems just like it was the other day that a bunch of girlfriends gathered at Cameron Smith’s house to hear about a new non-profit that was formed out of the heartache of two mothers losses. Jenny and Larissa bravely told us about their precious daughters and how they had lost them to cancer. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Heroes for Children was born and we all jumped in. Soon they became one of my first non-profit clients and together we created Heroes and Handbags, their signature fundraising event. I can’t believe that this year marks the 9th annual event. What a joy it has been to watch them grow.

The 9th annual Heroes and Handbags is this Friday, April 25th at the OMNI Dallas Hotel. Heroes for Children advocates for and provides financial and social assistance to families with children battling cancer. Since its inception in 2004, Heroes for Children has provided more than 4.8 million dollars to families and fulfilled more than 5,500 financial assistance grants.
Approximately 12,400 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year. On top of the cost of treatment and hospital bills, the cost of every day expenses can be overwhelming for many families. The average treatment time for a child with cancer is three years, making both financial and social assistance for patients and their families critical throughout this time. Heroes for Children continues to help ease the burden and provide assistance to families fighting childhood cancer.
Heroes and Handbags is a seated brunch with a silent auction of one-of-a-kind, vintage and new designer handbags. This year’s event, chaired by Andrea Weber, will feature bags from Gucci, Michael Kors, Nancy Gonzalez, Susie Straubmueller and Marchesa, just to name a few. Elaine Turner has also designed a custom handbag available in limited quantity and exclusive to this event.
Along with the silent auction, attendees will enjoy brunch, a raffle and bag walk, and have the opportunity to hear from Lauren Brown, a cancer survivor. In addition, Alison and Michael Weinstein will be presented with The Spirit of Allie and Taylor Award.
Registration is available online at www.heroesforchildren.org/dallashandbags or by calling 214-256-5824.
