My favorite night of the year happened last night. The Academy Awards, otherwise known as The Oscars. You might remember from this blog post about the Golden Globes that red carpet arrivals and award ceremonies are like the Super Bowl for fashion bloggers. With that, let’s discuss the Best and Worst Dressed of the 2017 Oscars!
Now, let me preempt this with the following. My opinions are only that. It’s me watching the red carpet arrivals, the Academy Awards, researching online, conferring with a few friends via text and social media and then coming up with this list. This has absolutely nothing to do with talent of the actor, their work or any of their other fashion choices. It simply is a reflection of my thoughts about their fashion choice last night.
I could tell early that gold and white were the colors of the night. Both colors look spectacular set against the red carpet and provide a neutral palette. I separated my selections into three categories: Best Dressed, I Can’t Decide and Worst Dressed. The ‘I Can’t Decide’ category is because I’m on the fence about these dresses. So I would love your input. Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts.
At the bottom, I have curated some beautiful dresses that anyone can wear to have their own red carpet moment. Most of them cost far less than anything you saw last night.
Which one would you wear? xoxo – Tanya
P.S. How about that dramatic ending to the Academy Awards with the wrong announcement for Best Picture?

Best Dressed
Best Dressed contenders at the 2017 Academy Awards. I think all these dresses were absolutely stunning on the red carpet. I like that two of them took a chance on length and embellishment.
Best Dressed: Viola Davis in this beautiful red Armani Prive. It fits her like a glove. Added bonus: She WON!
I Can’t Decide
I don’t love them or hate them. They are just meh, blah and in the middle.
I Can’t Decide winner: Emma Stone in Givenchy. I like her better in a bold color. Just not crazy about this look. She’s going for vanilla when she should try for peanut butter chocolate chip (you get the picture). Added bonus: She WON!
Worst Dressed
Worst dressed contenders. I mean, what were they thinking? I sort of like Haley Berry’s dress but what is going on with that wig? And those mustard colored dresses. Why would anyone want to look like a condiment?
Worst Dressed winner: Scarlett Johansson in Alaia. Wrong colors, too much fabric and its see through. The belt doesn’t help. It’s so unflattering. She does have beautiful skin, I’ll give her that. But that hair…

Excellent analysis, agree with all your choices. Scarlet Johansson, what a crazy mish-mash. If you’re going to do the Grace Jones-style precision hair, maybe don’t choose a dress that is the total opposite with the flowing and the Renoir colors? And such odd accessories.
The Hallie Berry hair thing was so distracting. I wondered if she had an original gameplan for her hair that went wrong, and this was a last-minute fix?
Teresa,
Thanks so much for leaving a comment. I mean what was Scarlet thinking?
Horrible.
Apparently, Hallie was trying to make a statement with her look. I think everyone missed the point.

I knew the second Viola Davis came out she was best dressed! That dress for her like a glove from every angle! Loved the color against her coloring – beautiful!!
Not sure who put Octavia in that weird feathered thing it looked like she had wrapped an elaborate bed spread around her- and she is beautiful!!!
I also thought Nicole Kidman nailed it- she really knows how to dress like a movie star! And she brought it as usual- I did not love her Gden Globe so pleased to see last night!!!
Matty-
RIGHT! Viola reins!

I think you are spot on. I did like Nicole Kidman’s dress but the red lips distracted me. I would have liked a “softer lip”!!!!
I missed the Oscars. I agree with your choices. I suspect a few of these dresses look better (or worse) in person. Interesting how Emma and Nicole chose such a bold lip with their dresses.
Love your picks…..none of the dresses were as dramatic as the ending! My top picks were Viola Davis and Emma Stone. I also liked Hailee Steinfeld. I thought she looked young and fresh. I always want to redress those that seem to have failed. For instance, I think Janelle Monae is adorable, however, her award season dress choices have been questionable. I would like to see her in something like what Jessica Biel had on, or even in Kirsten Dunst’s dress, which I loved. One of my favorite dresses was actually Kelly Rippa’s. I have to say, I liked Meryl’s pant suit dress. My son is an actor, so I’m hoping to wear a wonderful dress and go to the Oscar’s someday. 🙂
Thank you Kelly! Glad you liked them.

I’d wear them all…well almost. There’s a few fugly ones in the bunch. Thanks for posting!
Good point Christy!

I really admired, and thought it brilliant, that Halle Berry went with her ‘natural’ hair (her stylist swears it is all hers) to poke at the point of the #oscarssowhite. Brilliant…take another look at her dress and hair in that context. She told a reporter she wanted to be ‘wild and free’. Bingo. She does look amazing. The perennial 21 year old!
Really? Interesting.
I still don’t like it.
Tanya 🙂
I love Viola Davis’s dress. Just stunning. Didn’t show off any areas that make me cringe with my kids. I love the dress, it is classy and the color is beautiful. She is pretty darm beautiful as well.
Glad we agree Kelly!
