I know summer is rapidly coming to a close, but that does not mean your summer tan has to! Today I want to look at easy ways to keep your tan going year-round. It’s also a great way to stay tan if you want to avoid the scorching heat. Since I’m always on the hunt for the perfect bronzed look but without the UV rays, I’ve tested dozens of options and rounded up the best self tanners for 2026 that are streak-free, natural-looking, and perfect for any occasion. From buildable drops to express mousses, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s dive in!
For those of you who have not been with me for 12+ years that I’ve had this blog, you might want to read this blog post about my skin cancer scare. It is still the blog post that resonates the most with my readers and the one that people actually stop me to discuss. Many of you told me your own personal journey about going to the dermatologist and taking care of your own spots that you discovered after you read my blog post. I’m grateful that this little space on the web was helpful in some small way!
Just know when you see any type of beach, pool, or swimsuit shot of me, I have slathered on sunscreen and its typically 50 SPF strength. Gone are my high school days of baking my skin with baby oil and a reflective blanket. After all, that’s what caused all of my skin damage to begin with. Now, I use sunless tanners, sprays and lotions to get that glow! I go to Sugared + Bronzed for my spray tans. I love the fact that I can schedule them online and they have numerous locations. And yes, I spray tan naked because I don’t want tan lines.
Now let’s talk best self tanners that really work. I’m giving you our favorites, which all come in different forms and for different skin tones…
1. St. Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse – best overall
If I could recommend just one self tanner for most people, this would be it. St. Tropez has remained one of the most trusted names in self tanning because it’s incredibly beginner-friendly, develops into a believable bronze, and fades evenly without becoming patchy. The Express formula lets you customize your color depending on how long you leave it on before rinsing. One hour gives a light glow, two hours creates a medium tan, and three hours develops into a deeper bronze.
2. Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops – best face tanner
These self-tanning drops are still a top pick in 2026, and for good reason. These vegan, color-correcting drops blend with your moisturizer for a custom tan that develops naturally over time. Choose from light, medium, or dark based on your skin tone, and simply add a few drops to your favorite lotion. No mess, no strong scent, and no orange finish—just glowing skin. Perfect for face and body! These drops are a game-changer for people who want full control over their tan. Whether you’re building it slowly over a few days or applying it more heavily for faster results, they work beautifully. Plus, they won’t stain sheets or clothing. And yes, they’re clean, cruelty-free, and totally customizable.
3. Dolce Glow Lusso Self-Tanning Mousse – best luxury self tanner
One of the biggest standouts for 2026 is Dolce Glow. Created by celebrity spray tan artist Isabel Alysa, this mousse has become a favorite among beauty editors and celebrities alike. The color develops beautifully without looking orange, and the finish has that expensive, vacation-like glow that photographs so well. It also contains hydrating ingredients, so your skin feels soft instead of dry. If you’re looking to splurge on a luxury self tanner, this one is absolutely worth trying.
4. Bondi Sands Technocolor 1-Hour Express Mousse – best for color matching
One of the most innovative tanners to launch recently, the Technocolor line uses undertone-specific technology to help you find your perfect match. Whether you’re cool, warm, or neutral-toned, there’s a formula for you. Plus, it develops in just one hour—ideal for last-minute plans or travel prep. Bondi Sands is known for its deep, rich results and streak-free formulas. This mousse includes a color guide so you can see where you’ve applied it, making it perfect even for beginners. And despite being an express tanner, the results last just as long as traditional options.
5. Coco & Eve Sunny Honey Bali Bronzing Foam – best long-lasting tan
This cult-favorite Honey Bali Bronzing Foam formula is still going strong in 2026. It smells like vacation (think tropical mango and guava), applies smoothly with a color guide, and develops into a rich, golden tan that lasts up to 10 days. It’s packed with antioxidants and amino acids to keep skin hydrated and smooth. Users rave about the non-sticky feel and the streak-free finish. Plus, it’s 100% vegan and toxin-free. If you want something that smells good, feels good, and looks great then Coco & Eve Bronzing Foam is a must.
6. b.tan Tanned AF Mousse – best budget pick
If you’re not messing around and want that rich, bronze look fast then this tanning mousse is for you. It develops in 1–4 hours depending on how deep you want the tan, and it’s a fave for vacations or photo shoots. It also scores points for being vegan, cruelty-free, and free of parabens. Plus, the bold branding and easy application make it a standout. It has a guide color so you can see exactly where you’re applying it, which is a lifesaver for avoiding streaks.
7. Luxe Unfiltered No.32 Hydrating Self-Tanning Cream – best clean formula
Created by influencer Sivan Ayla, this Hydrating Self-Tanning Cream is a clean, non-toxic formula is fragrance-free and delivers a super subtle, gradual glow. It’s perfect for anyone with sensitive skin or those wanting a minimalist, natural-looking tan. It feels like a high-end body cream and leaves skin looking dewy and even. Because it builds slowly, it’s also great for maintaining a tan after a spray tan or vacation. Plus, the chic packaging looks gorgeous on any vanity.
8. Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body Shimmer – best instant glow
If you’re not quite ready to commit to a self-tanner or want an instant glow without the wait time, the Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body shimmer is a game changer. It’s not a self-tanner, but rather a skin highlighter and body shimmer that gives you that red carpet-worthy radiance right away. Think of it as a subtle body contour product—it reflects light and makes your skin look more toned, smooth, and elongated. I like to apply it down the center of my arms and legs to catch the light just right. It’s hydrating, blends easily, and gives your skin that dewy, sun-kissed finish without any mess or commitment. Perfect for events, travel, or when you just need a little something extra!
Self Tanning Tips
Getting the best results from your self tanner isn’t just about the product—it’s about the prep and the process. Here are my tried-and-true tips:
Exfoliate & shave the day before. This removes dead skin cells and gives you a smooth base.
Moisturize dry areas. Think: hands, feet, elbows, and knees. These areas can grab color and turn patchy if not hydrated.
Use a tanning mitt. It helps blend and keeps your hands from turning orange!
Apply in sections. Start from your feet and work upward. This prevents creases from bending over.
Avoid water, sweat, and tight clothing. Let your tan fully develop before rinsing or working out.
Moisturize daily after tanning. This helps prolong your glow and keeps your skin hydrated.
To correct mistakes: Use a self-tan eraser like Isle of Paradise’s or gently exfoliate with a washcloth and lemon juice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does self tanner last? Most self tanners last between 5–7 days, but products like Coco & Eve or b.tan can last up to 10 days with proper care.
Can I use self tanner on my face? Yes, but make sure it’s formulated for facial use. Tanning drops like Isle of Paradise are great because they blend with your skincare.
What’s the best self tanner for beginners? St. Tropez has color guides that make application foolproof. Gradual tanners like Luxe Unfiltered are also easy to use.
Will self tanner make me orange? Not if you use the right tone for your skin. Products that offer undertone-specific formulas (like Bondi Sands Technocolor) are especially good at avoiding that orange cast.
How can I remove self tanner if I mess up? Use a tan eraser or exfoliate in the shower with a mitt and body scrub. Baby oil or lemon juice can also help lift excess color.

I agree, days of sitting in the sun for a tan is no longer an option for me. Thank you for all these options. I really like the Tan Lux drops because I can control the depth of color by the number of drops I use. Would really rather go to a salon to have it done—any recommendations for Houston?
Julie-
Try Palm Beach Tan. Do you have those in Houston? Their Versa Spa works pretty well. TIP: Get two passes on your legs. That’s what the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders do.

You can get the Isle of Paradise on their website, they are in stock!! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
Great, comprehensive list! I cannot tan due to sun damage from my youth so I am a BIG believer in self tanning!
Have you tried Fake Bake sunless tanner? I’m stuck on it. Afraid nothing else will be as good.
Tammy-
I have not. But I see it is available here: https://rstyle.me/+n_UKEzliIBdfkeoqg8gSig
Thanks for the suggestion.

LOVE it when a question in your suggestion box gets answered! Particularly the smell aspect….you know me! GREAT post Tanya! Thank you!
We aim to please!
Glad you liked today’s blog post!

I had to stop getting spray tans because they made my brown spots (from years of tanning), darker. Which of these self tanners would be best for someone with my skin?
This is true Stacey. I have a little trick for that.
Take a dab of moisturizer and put it on the most obvious brown spots to prevent the spray tan from hitting your skin. It really helps.
Also, I get most of my brown spots lasered off at the dermatologist office.
Hope that helps!

Great post! My husband hates the smell of the Jergens which I was using after I got a spray tan just to moisturize and keep my tan going. He’s very sensitive to smells. I live in Calgary, Canada and go to the Vanity Vault for an Organic Tan and it turns out beautiful. I work at the Cancer Centre here so I know all about skin cancers and I am glad you slather on the SPF 50!
The Charlotte Tilbury shimmer product is forgiving and creates a youthful, natural glow! Highly recommend!
Thanks for all the recommendations. So many new tan products on the market to day, it’s hard to choose. With my very fair skin, I need to try some of these great suggestions. I look like Kasper the ghost. In the past, I have used Tan Towels and they are very similar to Kate Sommerville. I love all your suggestions and especially the tips for before tanning. Thanks for all the good suggestions Good article with informative information.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have been wanting to try the drops. I have very sensitive skin. Any suggestions which product might be best for sensitive skin.
Hi Linda! Ramsey says her skin is very sensitive, so she loves Isle of Paradise the best…either drop or spray. Because this is a vegan line of products, it is great for sensitive skin. I’d recommend any “clean” or organic brands, like Kora Organic Lotion or Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Serum mentioned above in post. Hope that helps!

So many choices with lots of great info! After reading about each product I thought, Ok, I’ll try that one. Now back to square one, which one do I try? For sure, drops that I add into moisturizer. Thanks for doing all the work for us.
Well, we aim to please. This one was a lot of research but it is great information for anytime.

I really like Tan-Luxe The Buttet, goes on like a lotion and gives a nice natural tan with no smell.
Oops, it’s Tan Luxe The Butter
Tanya – love this post (I realize it’s from 2019). I, too, have had a bout of melanoma. My daughter gets married in June and I wanted to spray tan before the wedding (and do a trial run before). I was going to take your suggestion and try GlowwTan. However, it appears they are no longer in business. Do you have another spray tan solution you recommend? Thanks for your recommendation!
Good catch! I am updating the blog post to reflect what I am now doing in 2024.

Thanks for sharing these self-tanning tips! It’s crucial to protect our skin while achieving that summer glow. I can relate to your journey and the importance of sunless tanners for a healthy complexion.
I am absolutely obsessed with self tanner and I tried them all. These are good but i recently tried Peta Jane beauty and its honestly the best color out of all of them. I highly recommend you try it.
