The hottest trend over the past 10 months? The face mask. Although this new accessory has many benefits, there is one repercussion that most of us have experienced: maskne. Mask acne, or “maskne” are the dreaded pimples, zits and blemishes that form in the area in which you wear your mask. If you have worn your mask for several hours at a time while talking, sweating, or even breathing, then you have probably experienced some form of maskne. This new acne is formed by bacteria, moisture, friction and weather caused by wearing your mask. The good news is that there are ways to solve this pesky problem! Today let’s look at tips on how to get rid of maskne. Also, if you are looking for some new face masks, be sure and check out my favorites HERE. I also have more options linked below. Also, be sure and scroll all the way through for MLK Day SALES.
Let’s start out with the best way to prevent maskne. I think we all know by now to wash your masks regularly and to avoid wearing make-up underneath your mask. Besides that, the specialists recommend that best practice is to use a gentle cleanser on your face twice daily. This prevents the build up of bacteria and keeps the face moisturized. Now, because it is the winter we are looking at an additional complication: dry skin. This means that our skin is even more prone to breakage, which can allow the bacteria to get in and cause the maskne. Therefore, the best advice is to wash your face before and after you wear your face mask, plus add a moisturizer. I recommend Colleen Rothschild’s Balancing Gel Cleanser and Radiant Cleansing Balm for the best skin. The cleanser gently cleanses and restores the skin’s pH, while the cleansing balm moisturizes, clears congested pores and removes leftover make-up. Face Oil No. 9 is another great moisturizer specifically made for your face.

How to Get Rid of Maskne
Now onto the good stuff! So we know how to prevent it, but how do we solve it once it’s there? 2020 was hard enough as it is without feeling like a middle school teen going through puberty all over again. Let’s make 2021 better by getting rid of maskne and having the best skin yet.
1) Wash
To get rid of your blemishes, it is important to wash your face twice a day, especially after you remove your mask. For an acne cleanser, I recommend this First Aid Beauty Acne Cleanser or this CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser. Another option is this Tula Skincare Purifying Cleanser. It is part of this three step Acne Clearing Kit, which is really effective for fighting acne. If you are not in a place where you can properly wash your face after removing your face mask, I recommend these Wipeys Face Wipes. They will clean excess bacteria as well as moisturize when you are on the go.
2) Apply Moisture
It seems counterintuitive to add moisture to acne, but this is key to fighting the maskne, especially during the winter! If you have oily skin, then I recommend this Tula Skincare Oil-Free Acne Moisturizer or The Water Cream by Tatcha. This CeraVe Facial Moisturizer includes an SPF 30, making it another great option.
3) Spot Treatment
Using an acne spot treatment is another great practice. This Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment has been proven to quickly eradicate acne. Also, I recommend trying this Fighting Five essential oil. Fighting Five is a a combination of the most powerful essential oils to specifically target and fight off bacteria. It is similar to thieves oil, which was said have prevented people from getting the Bubonic Plague. Seems fitting to use during another pandemic! Just put the oil on your blemishes and it should significantly improve your skin. You could even put Fighting Five essential oil in your mask as a protective barrier. This combines well with Sunday Riley U.F.O. Acne Treatment Face Oil, which combine salicylic acid with tea tree oil and other essential oils to fight off acne in a natural way.
4) Add Retinol
Retinol has been proven to speed up cell recovery, making it a product that not only fights aging, but also fights skin blemishes. My favorite product containing Retinol is the Revision Skincare D.E.J. Night Face Cream. You may remember when I wrote about it HERE, that this product works while you sleep with a 0.25% time released Retinol formula. The time release minimizes irritation. This night cream improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of pores, and intensely hydrates the skin. If you want
