Lately, I decided to start trying to layer my jewelry more. I’ve noticed how chic and trendy it looks, so I had to experiment!
It took me a while to get the hang of it but I’m definitely sold on layering necklaces since it really elevates a casual look. So today I want to share my findings on how to layer necklaces like a pro. If I can do it, you can too!

The best thing about layering necklaces is that it is actually very easy. I learned how to do this by following my blogger buddy Style of Sam. She’s so good at it and I’m still a novice. I’ve detailed the necklaces I use down below, but I also found that many brands make it easy by giving you a set of necklaces to layer like this. I think it’s great to have a quick and easy layered necklace to throw on such as this one, but I also love to have a collection of single necklaces that I can mix and match. It’s important to have both dainty ones and chunky ones too.
How to Layer Necklaces Like a Pro – Tip #1: Choose Different Lengths
One thing I found that works best when you layer necklaces is using necklaces of different lengths. It creates more dimension and the necklaces don’t compete with each other this way.
How to Layer Necklaces Like a Pro – Tip #2: Focus on the Neckline
When you layer necklaces, it works best if you wear a scoop neck like this. A v-neck could work too. It’s essential to leave the neck more exposed so that the jewelry can truly shine!
How to Layer Necklaces Like a Pro – Tip #3: Contrast Metals
This may be something for you to get used to, but it is actually OK to mix different metals. So silver with gold or rose gold is no problem. It actually is very stylish and shows that you are bold. We all need a little more boldness, right? Don’t ever be afraid to break the “rules.”
This necklace is from Etsy and comes in gold, rose gold and silver. It can be easily personalized with kids names or pet names like mine. This would make a sweet gift for holidays like Mother’s Day, birthdays or Christmas. I wear this gold coin necklace from Julie Vos pretty often – alone or layered. Such a classic and delicate go-to when I need to add a little something to my outfit. Recently, I got this gold chain choker necklace (similar here) and I think it is quite chic. Mine is from Bychari who are well known for the original space letter necklaces. I also find that Ylang23 has great options.
In the end, you really can’t go wrong. Honestly, there are no set rules. Just have fun when you layer necklaces like I did! Shop more great necklace options for layering below. The order of my necklaces: Bychari gold chocker, Julie Vos coin necklace, Waterford Crystal necklace found in Ireland and rose gold disk necklace with pet names.

P.S. The best way to order a chocker necklace is to first measure your neck with a tape measure.

How do you keep them from getting tangled up together? I must say it’s been a long time since I tried it because I still have nightmares about untangling tiny chains using straight pins back in the 80’s…
Paige-
Great question. A reader/follower just suggested that I try a ‘Necklet’ to keep my necklaces from getting tangled. I just ordered one and will let you know how it goes.

I just love the necklace with your children’s names engraved on it! It’s now on my Christmas wish list!
Hi Jennifer-
Mine are actually the pet names as we are empty nesters. But I would certainly add children or grandchildren!

I first saw it with Stella and Dot Jewelry. It is a fun look.
I love this look and I think it really elevates a simple outfit. I am learning to do this. Haven’t tried mixing metals yet but need to! Thanks for this “tutorial”!
