Madewell high rise crop wide leg jeans / White t-shirt / White denim jacket / Straw Pom Pom tote (love this version too) / Nude wedge sandal (they come in black and brown too) / Sunglasses / Lips: Tom Ford in Spanish Pink
Today I decided to team up with Nordstrom to try the “high waisted” denim trend. Now, let’s be real. If you grew up in the 80’s you wore these all the time. And we just called them jeans because all jeans were high waisted. Guess what? That’s where your natural waist is. Let’s explore this denim trend and what the added benefits are.
Ah, the 80’s! Big hair, tight jeans, espadrilles and oversized shirts with shoulder pads. What’s not to love about that? Honestly, I loved growing up in the 1980’s. I have found memories of my high school and college days. Maybe I should dig around and post some of those pictures. Wouldn’t that be a hoot! We could call that “How Tanya’s style evolved”. Lawrdy…
So, when Nordstrom asked me to do a blog post focusing on a denim trend, it seemed logical to discuss this one. High waisted is defined as “a high-rise or high-waisted garment is one designed to sit high on, or above, the wearer’s hips, usually at least 8 centimetres (3 inches) higher than the navel.” I decided to order the Madewell high rise crop wide leg jean because I wanted a high waisted jean that had a little character. They are super comfortable and fit true to size. Now, because I am naturally high waisted (my waistline is only a couple of inches beneath my boobs), I wanted to offset the high waist with a jacket. I styled them with this white t-shirt and white denim jacket. And how cute is this straw pom pom tote? I love this bucket version too. I just got these beautiful nude wedge heels and you will see them a lot all the time on the blog. They are the bomb.com!
Benefits of wearing high waisted jeans
- No “Muffin-Top”: Prevents the dreaded “muffin-top.” Yes, high rise jeans don’t cut you off at the hips, it sits comfortably at the waist.
- No Sucking in Your Stomach: High rise jeans do the work for you, they keep everything in place.
- Easy to Style: Just because you are wearing high-rise denim doesn’t mean you have to show that they are. The great thing about high waisted denim is that you can style them many different ways, and can either be worn casual or dressed up.
- Your legs look long: This illusion adds several inches to your legs. If you’re short, you will appear taller. Bonus!
Just imagine if I had chosen a high waisted skinny jean like this one. Legs for days… I challenge you to try the high waisted trend. I bet you will like it. Because once the 90’s rolled around, it made low waisted denim popular. Hello muffin top.
Be sure to check out my Mother’s Day post from last week. Wishing all the moms a very happy weekend filled with family and love!

There is nothing better than high waisted jeans!! You can actually sit down without things showing. And shirts stay tucked in. How fabulous.
Very interesting article. This was a great help. Thanks and keep going.
