Believe it or not, fall wedding season is almost upon us. One of the most popular questions I have been getting on Instagram is ‘what should I wear to a fall wedding?’ Ask and you shall receive! I have curated a list of the best fall wedding guest dresses for any upcoming weddings in September, October, or November that will make you look and feel your best. Detailed below are some of my personal favorite dresses, plus I have a variety of dresses in various styles and price points in the boutique at the bottom of the page. What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Dress Code Guide

So…what exactly do you wear to a fall wedding? Before you start shopping, the first thing to consider is the dress code. Cocktail, black tie, formal, and garden attire can all mean something different, and you also want to consider the venue and time of day. An outdoor afternoon wedding will call for a different look than an evening wedding at a formal venue.

Not sure what the dress code on your invitation actually means? Here’s a quick guide:

Black Tie Wedding Attire: This is your chance to really dress up! Women traditionally wear floor-length gowns or other very formal evening attire. Look for elevated fabrics and details like silk, satin, velvet, chiffon, or embellishments. Keep your accessories elegant as well. A dressier heel, evening bag, and beautiful jewelry will pull everything together. Black Tie Optional or Formal Wedding Attire: Black tie optional gives you a little more flexibility. Fall Color Guide

The venue, dress code, and style of the dress matter just as much as the color. Fall is also the perfect time to embrace richer colors and fabrics. Think burgundy, chocolate brown, forest green, navy, plum, rust, and other jewel tones. Fall florals are another great option, especially for an outdoor or garden wedding. And yes, you can absolutely wear black to a fall wedding! Just add elevated accessories to make the overall look feel festive and wedding-appropriate. And don’t feel like you have to avoid brighter colors altogether! Just be sure to avoid white, ivory, or anything that could read as bridal unless the couple specifically requests it.

Another go-to designer for me is Sue Sartor. I have worn two of her dresses to two different weddings this summer. I also have great luck finding dresses at Tuckernuck. Then of course Nordstrom is an easy place to find a variety of styles.

They offer one-time rentals on a huge assortment of wedding guest dresses. It is especially useful if the event has a specific theme, which is becoming more and more popular. Sometimes you just don’t want to buy a dress for a one-time wear. But for classic dresses, I always recommend purchasing.

My Fall Dress Picks

Keep in mind that what you wear to a September wedding can vary greatly from what you wear in November. Early fall can still bring warm, summer-like days, while November typically calls for richer tones, heavier fabrics, and longer sleeves. Of course, if the event is indoors, you have more flexibility regardless of the weather!

One of my top picks for fall wedding guest dresses is this strapless orange blossom dress (size S). I cannot say enough great things about this dress! The gorgeous organza fabric, the classic tea length style, and the pleated bodice give you an effortless elegance. Although the color is brighter for fall, the orange definitely works and is seasonally appropriate. If you’re someone that prefers sleeves, then you’re in luck! It also comes in this short sleeve A-line option.

Another dress that is perfect for a formal or outdoor wedding is this pinstripe dress (size S). The tie neck detail is so chic and can be worn multiple ways. Plus, I love the tie waist detail to break up the stripes and great a flattering line.

I also loved wearing this dupioni midi dress (size 4) to Laura’s wedding this summer. It is incredibly flattering, and I love the simple pocket details that really add the awe-factor. I own it in both pistachio and black because it is so good. They just released it in two fall tones, berry and evergreen, which are both perfect for fall.
