Hi y’all! How’s your week going so far? If you’re like me, you love easy, stylish ways to elevate your outfits, especially during summer when light, breezy looks rule. One of the most popular trends I get asked about is how to tie a half bow. So today, I’m breaking it down step-by-step, showing you exactly how I tie a half bow. Whether you’re working with a shirt dress, tie-waist shorts, trousers, or tops with waist ties, mastering the half bow will add that awe-factor to your look.
I’m demonstrating today with my favorite Ralph Lauren belted linen shirt dress, which is sold out. Some similar dresses includes this Ralph Lauren linen belted shirtdress, this cotton belted shirtdress and this striped linen shirtdress. This Ralph Lauren cotton striped shirtdress is another classic style. I would pick either lightweight cotton or linen. I styled it with white wrap sandals and a rattan clutch for the perfect summer look.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Tie a Half Bow
Here’s my easy-to-follow tutorial on how to tie a half bow. I’ll walk you through each step so you can feel confident recreating this look at home.
1. Start by Grabbing Both Ends of Your Tie
Make sure the ends are even in length. If you’re tying to the side, the end opposite the side you’re tying on should be slightly longer to balance the look.
2. Make Your First Loop
Just like you would when tying a classic bow, make a loop with one side. The loop should point toward the opposite side of where your final bow will sit.
3. Wrap the Other Side Around the Loop
Take the other end of the tie and wrap it around the base of the loop from behind.
4. Pull Through to Form the Half Bow
Begin pulling the wrapped side through from the back, just like you’re making a regular bow, but only pull it enough to create one loop and leave the other side hanging loose.
5. Adjust and Tighten
Tighten your bow gently and adjust the loop and ends until you get the perfect look so it’s not too tight and not too loose. And voila! You have a beautiful half bow ready to take your outfit up a notch.

The half bow isn’t just cute but it’s practical, too. In warmer months, you want your outfits to feel breezy and relaxed, yet put-together. The half bow achieves that balance perfectly. It keeps your waist defined and adds a feminine flourish. Plus, it’s a quick styling trick that can transform a basic shirt dress or pants into something eye-catching and chic, so you’re ready for whatever your day brings.
To give you some inspiration, here are a few of my favorite wardrobe pieces that look amazing with a half bow tie:
-

-
Tie-Waisted Shorts: Cinch the waist with a tie and finish with a half bow for that relaxed yet chic feel. My favorites include this denim pair and this relaxed pair.
-
Wrap Tops with Waist Ties: Add the half bow detail for a sweet, feminine touch. This blouse and this blouse are perfect for summer.
-
