I know what you’re thinking… black for Spring? Yep, that’s right! Black is a classic color that we all know is universally flattering and great year-round. When shopping for black this Spring, I’m aiming for breezy and feminine fabrics like lace, eyelet, silk, and cotton. The dress I’m wearing here is perfect because of the light lace material. I know it can be hard to find the perfect black dress that’s not boring, so read below to see my favorite 10 black dresses for Spring and Summer! I’ve compiled a detailed list of the types of black dresses to get you started.
Happy APRIL! Can you believe it’s April 1st? This is a busy week as I will be attending the rewardStyle Conference again this year. That is the conference where they invite the Top 200 bloggers/influencers to attend. We learn what’s new in the industry, meet with brands and attend fun events. I’ll do a recap of everything I wear to the conference because I’ve been pulling items for several days now. On that note, I attended the Dallas Travel and Adventure Show on Saturday. I learned so much and I plan to do a recap of Travel Tips this week. You’ll definitely want to read this one as it will have a ton of travel information in it. OK, on to today’s subject…
1. Lace Dress
The first great way to wear black this season is with a lace dress! I love this one from Talbots (pictured above) because it’s the perfect length and a feminine silhouette. It’s great to wear to something a bit nicer but still casual, such as a luncheon or church. I paired the dress with my favorite box bag from The Daily Edited, which I discussed in detail in a previous post. It’s easy to wear with just about anything, and I love how mine is personalized with my initials! I kept the classic look going with some black strappy heels, black sunglasses, and simple gold jewelry.
2. Shirt Dress
The next black dress to shop for this Spring is a shirt dress, which is one of my personal favorite pieces to wear. It’s timeless and very versatile. I’m obsessing over this Diane Von Furtsenberg shirt dress because it’s silk and has the prettiest tie at the waist to flatter your shape. I know we’re talking about black here, but I must say that it also comes in the most stunning powder blue and a bright pink – two of the big colors that are on-trend this year. Another option that’s a bit more casual than this is my Love Shack Fancy black dress (it also comes in white). I showed you how to wear this two different ways in one of my recent posts. It’s a very lightweight midi dress perfect for the weekends or vacation too!
3. Work Dress
Whether you work in an office or work from home and have meetings like I do, you certainly need a nice black dress that’s more professional. My personal favorite is this Harper Rose belted sheath. It has a nice stretch so that it’s comfortable for work. I really love how the buckled belt gives a crisp touch and the ruffle sleeves add some feminine flair! It’s classy and appropriate, yet up to date with the trends.
4. T-shirt Dress
When lounging on the weekends, it’s always nice to have a comfortable dress come Spring and Summer. Sooner than we realize, leggings will become just too warm to wear! So to keep with that comfort, try a black “t-shirt” dress. Eileen Fisher has some great options in soft jersey fabric, like this shirttail dress or hooded cotton dress. Pair with fashion sneakers like these or these and you will look like the master of “athleisure” while running errands!
5. Weekend Casual Dress
While athleisure on the weekends is comfy and easy, it’s also necessary to have something a bit more polished for going out to lunch or somewhere fun with the family. This cute Lafeyette 148 shift dress is ideal because you can just throw it on with a gold necklace and some platform wedges or slide sandals. Another good option is to just toss on this easy Finley shirt dress. This also comes in trendy Spring colors like coral and bright blue. It’s casual and cool with trendy sneakers, slide sandals, or espadrille wedges too. Both dresses are timeless pieces that will never go out of style and can clearly be worn in so many different ways!
6. Cocktail Dress
Of course you will also need a cocktail dress for parties or Springtime weddings coming up soon. I love a nice dress that comes to or covers my knees like this Eliza J dress, but my assistant Ramsey loves to wear shorter dresses like this adorable Alice & Olivia ruffled mini! You can see I included a few more trendy options from her down below.
7. Vacation Maxi
You surely have a Spring or Summer vacation planned! If not, it’s time to treat yourself at least to a “staycation” perhaps? Whatever your plans are, I suggest investing in a fabulous black maxi dress. My favorite is this one from Shopbop. It’s the most flattering halter neckline for just about everyone. I just love the belt and scoop back! Would be stunning on a fun beach trip with some bright earrings. I’m also really liking this Rachel Pally one-shoulder maxi too. It has the cutest hemline!
8. Wrap Dress
So I know wrap dresses can be tough sometimes, but I cannot resist sharing Yumi Kim’s midi wrap dress. Between the length and the notched collar, it’s truly one of the most versatile wrap dresses I’ve seen. I could wear this on vacation with wedges, a date night with leopard pumps, or even to a lunch meeting with mules. Ladies, this is a must-have that rings in right under $200! If wrap dresses make you too nervous about a wardrobe malfunction though, just try a faux wrap style like this one.
9. Smocked Dress
This may be news to some, but I’m sure a lot of y’all have noticed the resurgence of smocked fabric this season! It’s popping up in everything from shirts to skirts to dresses. I found the best black smocked dress here at Nordstrom. It’s off the shoulder and maxi length, so I’d love it for a date night, party, or a getaway.
10. Wow Dress!
Rounding out my top 10 list is simply a “wow” dress! It can be hard to find a black dress that’s a real showstopper sometimes, but this Tibi sheath dress fits the bill. A second option is this Halston Heritage maxi, which is so fun and flirty. When looking for a “wow” black dress, look for those added details like ruffles, a cinched belt at the waist, or a unique hemline. It’s those finishing touches that make a dress stand out.
Shop all of the above and more black dresses that Ramsey and I love below! Note: Even though I like my hemlines right at or below the knee, I say wear what makes you comfortable. If you have amazing legs – show them off with a shorter silhouette! Hemlines are not age specific.
xoxo – Tanya

Thank you for including dresses in longer lengths. The dresses I’m finding in stores these days are way too short to be office-appropriate (or age-appropriate).
Love back dresses in the spring/summer. I think you can make them look “fresh” with the right accessories and shoes! Thanks for showing different looks.
We went to the travel show on Sunday! Tons of inspiration. The boutique river cruises in europe looked promising. All these dresses look great and the Halston Heritage maxi is definitely a wow dress. Great post.
These black dresses are inspiring to me. I love classic black dresses, summer or winter. The lace and details make it kind of flirty. These are great dresses that won’t go out of style. Thanks for all the good tips.
