I wish you could smell this lilac. It was so beautiful and fragrant and simply capped off our day in Vienna, Austria.

Our Viking Cruise docked in Vienna and we got to spend the entire day exploring this beautiful European city. I would say that this was one of our most adventurous days. In the morning we went on a half day tour of the city which included the remarkable Ringstrasse, lined with palaces and grand residences. The Ringstrasses (ring street) encircles the medieval Innere Stadt (inner city). WE saw Hofburg Palace, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and the magnificent Vienna Opera House.

In the afternoon we went to see the Schobrunn Palace (that’s where the lilac picture was taken). This was the summer palace for the House of Hapsburg. They are the monarchy that ruled the Austria and the surrounding areas for hundreds of years. The one you have probably heard of is Maria Theresa. She was the Emperess who had 16 children, one of which was Marie Antoinette (and we all know what happened to her). This summer palace is magnificent with large grounds, gardens and beautiful furniture. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures inside.

That evening Pete and I elected to stay in the city and meet a friend for dinner. We met at Cafe Landtmann. The restaurant is in the Ringstrasse and is famous because Sigmund Freud had his daily morning coffee here. The food was delicious and it was great to reconnect with our Austrian friend.

We are making new friends and spending each day exploring a new city. Come back on Monday for more of the adventure. Happy weekend!  xoxo- Tanya
